Five Benefits of Feedback
Creating a feedback culture where open and honest discussions about successes, failures, behaviors and outcomes are a part of daily life rather than saved up for intimidating annual reviews can have dramatic impacts on your organization’s culture and your employees’ performance and job satisfaction.
Effective feedback:
makes employees and coworkers feel visible and valued: if you can comment on what they’re doing, it means you NOTICE what they’re doing, which means they’re not invisible.
amplifies the good: by calling out positive behaviors and outcomes you can model future success. “Do more of this” is something that isn’t said enough in most workplaces (or relationships!). Too often workplace feedback focuses on the negative. Remember to recognize the good as well as areas for improvement.
chips away at imposter syndrome: when you provide concrete evidence of why someone is good at their job it becomes harder for them to disagree. “When you did x, y happened and that helped the company in this way…”
prevents bad habits from becoming ingrained: as a collaborative coach, a manager or coworker can redirect potentially unproductive behaviors in a more positive direction before they take root.
opens dialogue: creating a feedback culture empowers everyone to contribute suggestions and ideas without fear of retribution. A learning environment breeds improvement and trust, which usually results in happier employees and better work product.
