The crash is coming…

I don’t know about you, but every time I take time off after a long stretch of working really really hard one thing happens. I get sick. My body and mind finally know that they don’t need to hold it together any more. That they can relax. And like clockwork, the sinus pressure builds, my throat starts to itch, and my whole body gets heavy with fatigue. This happens every. Single. Time. I feel myself wearing down, but I have one more big meeting to prep for, so I push on. I have one more trip to take, so I get on the plane. I make it work. That’s what I do. I know I have a break coming soon, so I push.

We’ve ALL been in that push for more than a year. Do you know what’s going to happen once that urgent stress subsides? You’re going to crash. Your teams are going to crash.

You’re vaccinated. The economy is picking up. You’re not actively worried every minute of the day. You’ll get everyone back to the office and be so excited for things to get back to normal. And collapse will hit. Hard. People will finally stop holding it together. They’ll get sick. They’ll have a hard time focusing. They’ll question if they even WANT to be there.

This is all to say that all the hard work you’ve been doing to take care of your business and your people over the hard parts isn’t over. I know that’s the last thing you want to hear right now.

First you need a plan to take care of yourself. Can you take a break now? Get your collapse out of the way so you’re ready to support your folks when theirs hits?

Then you need to talk with your leadership team about how to continue supporting your people, and how to plan for this inevitable re-entry reaction.

It’s not going to be back to normal. I’m happy to help you think through how to navigate this terrain. Drop me a note and we’ll talk.
