Finding the Good in Goodbye

What if you thought of people leaving your organization not as a rejection of you, or of your company, but as:

- Feedback that there’s work to be done in specific areas that the departing employees are probably willing to expand upon.
- Cause for celebration that they’re seeking out opportunities that better align with their current needs, and will (hopefully) be happier and more fulfilled in their new role.
- Opportunity to grow your network, staying in touch, learning about their new role and organization, and continuing to cheer them on.

People’s needs change - continually. What was a dream job two years ago may no longer be what someone needs today.

Expecting people to stay in one place forever is unrealistic, and not healthy for the employee or the organization.

That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to craft fulfilling, enjoyable jobs, but it does mean that you shouldn’t strive for 100% retention, or take each resignation as failure.
