Workout wisdom: watch the transitions.

It’s been a while since I’ve written a workout wisdom post, but I’m happy to report I’m getting back to normal after my injury, and I’ve found a new yoga instructor who doesn’t rub me the wrong way.

During a recent practice she cautioned us against racing from one pose to the next saying “in yoga, the transitions are as important as the poses. Often people get hurt in the transitions, so be sure to take your time and remain mindful”. This thought stayed with me as I left the studio.

Often people get hurt in the transitions.

This is certainly the case when companies go through changes. Employees find themselves frustrated, their work is deprioritized in favor of the new, their managers are preoccupied, their day-to-day tasks may change, they face uncertainty which causes discomfort, they have to change. And change can be hard.

Taking time to remain mindful will help smooth these transitions. To get the most out of moving from downward dog into cobra, a yogi needs to think about shifting weight, repositioning limbs and staying focused on breath. To ease a company from one state to the next, a leaders must think about the needs of the individuals as well as those of the company as a whole, and of the ripples each change may have, all the while staying focused on the cultural identity of the organization and how to preserve what’s integral.

As I trust an instructor to guide me safely from one pose to the next during a yoga session, companies can raise the odds of a smooth, less painful transition by enlisting a skilled change management expert to guide their organization from one state to the next. We’ve spent hours mindfully practicing our craft and can help you navigate around pitfalls, both universal and unique to your organization.
